Forget-me-not Cottage is a mix of the old and the new, with the best of both worlds. It is as the name suggests. Situated in the historic village of Oatlands, just one hour from Hobart and Launceston, it makes seeing Tasmania easy!

The double bed is on a mezzanine floor with a cot also and a twin room on the ground floor. The cottage has a large stain glass cathedral window on the sunny side, which naturally warms and brightens Forget-me-not, but also has under floor heating, a pot-bellied stove and electric blankets. All necessary utensils for self-contained living, including microwave, electric frypan, colour TV, washing machine and all provisions for breakfast plus complimentary port, sherry and plunger coffee. There is a claw foot bath with a shower over it.

On the ground floor there is a queen-sized bed, with 3 single beds in the attic above. There is also a mezzanine floor with another single bed overlooking the large wood fireplace in the lounge below. The original spiral staircases lead to the attics.

The Heritage Highway takes you through our island's scenic Midlands.

This is farming country, green and gold hillscapes dotted with sheep famous for their superfine wool, cattle and poppy fields, hawthorn hedges and winding streams. The skies are wide and in the north, ringed by distant mountain ranges, snowcapped in winter.

The area is dotted with historic villages. Lively metal sculptures along the roadside depict the bushrangers, convicts and colonial settlers for whose colourful past the highway is named. Watch out for the highwayman!

The original highway was constructed by convict labour. The drive between Launceston and Hobart now takes two and a half hours but allow yourself time to stop and enjoy the many attractions en route. Numerous sideroads lead you to villages off the beaten track, and you can choose from a variety of accommodation options.

Oatlands is an historic town with the largest collection of colonial sandstone buildings in Australia, many of which were convict built. Its intact Georgian townscape offers a complete representation of the architecture, urban design and the cultural heritage of early European settlement. The Midland Highway bypasses the town these days, but it's worth taking the short detour to spend some time in Oatlands. The most noticeable silhouette on the Oatlands skyline and visible from the highway is the Callington Mill. Built in 1837, this Lincolnshire tower mill is the only operating mill of its type in the Southern Hemisphere. Other buildings of interest include the Supreme Court House (1829), St Peters Church (1888), St Pauls Pugin Church (1850), Uniting Church (opened 1856), and the Oatlands Gaol and Gaoler's Residence (1834 and 1836).
