The Robert Ulmann Studio of noted wildlife artist, Robert Ulmann, and his daughter, Justine, a botanical artist, is open to visitors. On open farmland overlooking the sea, the studio is situated four kilometres east of the Hopkins River Bridge in Warrnambool. Please close the gate behind you. A fine selection of original watercolours, ink, linocuts, acrylics and oils are available, as well as prints, cards and whale charts. Most works are matted but unframed, and easily packed for safe travel. Robert Ulmann studied sculpture and painting in Zurich before emigrating to Canada where he initiated handicraft programs for Inuit in isolated settlements across the central Arctic. His paintings and prints of wildlife from Australia and overseas fill a beautiful studio overlooking the famous Logans Beach whale nursery at Warrnambool. In September 1989 an Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) documentary on Robert Ulmann's work as a wildlife artist, with special emphasis on his love of the Southern Right Whale, was shown on television. A Brush with Nature, the first program filmed in the Wildscreen series, has had ten repeats in Australia and been shown around the world, even being dubbed into Thai. Robert and his work were also featured in Penny Olsen's book Feather and Brush: Three centuries of Australian Bird Art, CSIO Publishing, 2001. The book was dedicated to Robert. Robert's daughter, Justine, having completed a Ph.D at Melbourne University on the depiction of insects in Japanese Rimpa painting, is continuing the Ulmann family tradition of painting the natural world. She studied botanical illustration at the Royal Botanic Gardens with Dianne Emery, and has her own small studio and gallery, Ulmann Art on Canning Street in Carlton, just north of the Exhibition Buildings and Museum.
